Do I go broke because of my wedding? Who pays for what?

The typical Naija wedding has its hassles; Planning, coordinating and most of all the funding. It’s traditionally believed that the woman’s family should handle most of the activities of the wedding day since they are the ones who are hosting the other family. It’s not wise to bear all the costs of the wedding because as we know, it’s the coming together of two families so both families have to work out what they will handle financially so as to make the wedding go on without hassles. Unlike a decade ago, the lines are no longer rigidly drawn.  The burden of paying for the wedding has shifted in recent years from the shoulders of the father of the bride, to include the groom’s family.  Also, with many couples marrying later and having money of their own, they are sharing in the expenses.

Working out a budget for your wedding is one of the first things that should be done, once the date is set.  Will the ceremony be Introduction, Traditional and White wedding or is it going to be Nikkai   afterwards? You will also need to draw up a list for who pays for what?

Please note that there are NO HARD OR FAST RULES as to “Who Pays for What”, but a general guideline follows as to the traditional breakdown.
