‘The Wedding Party’ Already Broke A Nollywood Record In Its First Weekend

2016 has been a pretty great year for Nollywood – from the undeniable quality of the TIFF-worthy dramas, 93 Days and ‘76, to the sheer box office power of AY Makun’s A Trip to Jamaica (which broke a Guinness World Record).

Now with the release of Kemi Adetiba’s The Wedding Party, Nollywood rounds up a stellar 2016 with even more success as it opens big across Nigeria – handily beating global blockbuster Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – with an opening weekend gross of ₦36 million (₦1 million more than A Trip To Jamaica, making it the highest in the history of Nollywood).

The Wedding Party, written by playwright Tosin Otudeko and Kemi Adetiba, follows the story of Dunni Coker (Adesua Etomi), an art gallery owner about to marry IT entrepreneur, Dozie (Banky W), as they navigate their vow of chastity and their meddling parents.

The Wedding Party is currently showing in cinemas around Nigeria.
