The National Universities Commission, NUC, has given approval to Obong University in Akwa Ibom State, to commence five new programmes.
The institution located in Etim Ekpo Local Government is one of the two privately-owned universities in Akwa Ibom State.
The five new programmes which are to be offered at the Bachelors level include: Public Administration, International Relations, Political Science, Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, and Sociology.
The approval was conveyed to the university via a letter signed by Gidado Bello Kumo.
The commission stated that the approval of the new courses followed the result of the resource evaluation visit which was carried out on the university by panels of NUC experts.
It noted that the evaluation visit was embarked upon to assess the human and material resources available for the establishment of the new programmes.
It said after due consideration of the report submitted by the resource evaluation panel, the NUC Management Committee at its 442nd meeting, had approved the establishment of five new programmes to be run at the university beginning from the 2015/2016 academic session.
In his reaction, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Udoudo Moses Ekanemesang, commended the commission and described the process of the accreditation as “thorough and painstaking”.
He noted that the meticulous effort by the NUC team will go a long way in strengthening the tertiary educational system in the country.
Mr. Ekanemesang assured that facilities are in place to receive the influx of students to the university when the institution opens its doors for a new session in October.
He, therefore, urged parents and guardians all over Nigeria desirous of giving high quality tertiary education in a serene environment at an affordable cost to consider sending their wards to the university located at Obong Ntak, Akwa Ibom state.
Obong University was licensed by the Federal Government on the recommendation of the NUC on May 27, 2007.
It is built on Christian values and the highest standards of academic excellence.
Other programmes offered in the university apart from the five newly approved programmes include: Accountancy, Economics, Biochemistry, Computer Science and Microbiology.
